Summer School Dresden 2021
With a share of over 50%, the construction sector is by far the world's largest producer of waste. In addition to the pollution caused by the waste produced, the production and processing of new building materials is a significant driver of global climate change due to immense CO2 emissions. Turning away from the linear manufacturing process (production-use-disposal) towards circular material cycles is therefore a declared goal for future-proof and sustainable construction (UN Sustainable Development Goals 2025). In the Summer School, possibilities for integrating such material cycles into architectural planning and construction processes were analysed, designed, tested and evaluated using the case study of "urban mining". The focus was on conveying and applying innovative research processes to the students with a view to further independent work. In the long term, the Summer School is to take up a permanent place in the extracurricular educational offer of the TU Dresden and thus represents the start of an educational series. The main advantage of the 14-day intensive programme was the extraordinarily deep and motivated engagement of the participants with the topic, as well as the accompanying comprehensive understanding of the methods and principles applied. The results of the Summer School in terms of content, methods and didactics are published as an ongoing publication and are constantly being further developed.
