Rare Disease Day 2024
On February 29, 2024, our poster session on "Stroke in Childhood" took place on "Rare Disease Day".
Stroke in childhood is considered a rare disease, with an incidence of 1-8 cases per 100,000 children per year. A disease is classified as rare when fewer than 5 out of 10,000 individuals are affected.
Childhood stroke is characterized by a high morbidity rate. This means that two thirds of affected children show neurological symptoms for the rest of their lives. Common symptoms include hemiplegia, movement disorders, behavioral disorders, speech disorders or visual-spatial deficits. These impairments also affect interaction with the built environment. An inadequately designed environment can lead to barriers and obstacles for these children in various areas of life such as kindergarten, school or therapy, as well as in the hospital environment. This was investigated by twelve architecture students this winter semester as part of the ARCH4HEALTH Student Reseach Lab.
The results of the student research projects were presented at a poster session on "Rare Disease Day". The students' posters can be viewed in the slideshow below.
