INVENTION ENGINEERING. Inspiration mining for material-minimized design of carbon concrete structures
Program: DFG
Lead: Institute of Concrete Structures TUD
Runtime: 2020-2024
Team: Sebastian Wiesenhütter
Partners: RWTH Aachen University IPF Dresden
The potential of the new construction material „Carbon Reinforced Concrete“ enables and requires fundamentally new approaches in construction and engineering design. Hence the central research question of the project is how traditional patterns of thinking can be erupted through creative methods and impulses, particularly from the domain of fine arts.
Current approaches in the fields of creativity research, Design Research, and Art Thinking, as well as algorithms for semantic retrieval and Machine Learning, are utilized and translated into a new method of Invention Engineering to enable creative processes, structures, and design methods. A distinct and structured process is to be developed, that supports engineers to discover transdisciplinary sources of inspiration from the fields of literature, fine arts, film, or science fiction to formulate radically new approaches for design, construction, and fabrication processes and rapidly generate and evaluate a plentitude of new novel ideas. The project is a subproject of the special Research cluster TRANSREGIO 280 "Design strategies for material-minimised carbon concrete structures - foundations for a new way of building".
