"Smart City EXPO World Congress" Barcelona 2023: WISSENSARCHITEKTUR presented strategies, roadmaps und 3D models
At this year's Smart City EXPO World Congress 2023 - the world's largest trade fair for urban innovation - in Barcelona, WISSENSARCHITEKTUR - Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture with research partners from HCU Hamburg's Digital City Science Team took part in the fair`s showroom.
The research team presented scientific methods from the Model Project Smart City Dresden: a project funded by the German federal government to develop digitalisation strategies in the City of Dresden in the sense of sustainable, integrated and public welfare-oriented urban development.
How to create a Smart City Strategy
M.Sc. Arjama Mukherjee and Dr. Paul R. Stadelhofer (WISSENSARCHITEKTUR) provided a Crash-Course on How-To Co-Create your smart city strategy where visitors to the stand were able to apply the methods of the strategy process to their municipality themselves. For example: Which stakeholders should be included in the strategy process? On the one hand, it is useful to involve the population in urban development in a democratic and transparent manner; on the other hand, these stakeholders provide valuable knowledge that can help to identify problems or solutions.
The participants quickly identified the stakeholder groups that they considered important for the process. Then they worked with the WISSENSARCHITEKTUR team to draw up an individual roadmap, i.e. an organisational plan for the strategy process.
WISSENSARCHITEKTUR has developed an agile approach for the Smart City model project. In special workshop formats, the status quo is determined ("How smart is our city?") and then a strategic vision is developed, on the basis of which concrete smart city measures, such as applications for environmental monitoring or traffic optimisation, are planned. The implementation of the measures is evaluated and the strategy is updated. The tested strategy and successful measures are to be transferred to other municipalities as models.
"Smart-City-Driving License" und 3D-Modell der eigenen Stadt
At the end of the crash course, the participants received a "Smart City driving licence" as a (symbolic) certificate - a little fun that was well received. They were also able to use the WISSENSARCHITEKTUR co-design tool U_CODE to redesign their own urban environment (using the Open Street Map LOD2 data) and visualise new ideas.
Visitors who were interested in these projects in more detail (or had a potential commission to offer) found the right contact person here: Arjama Mukherjee carries out U_CODE participation formats on an international level in the WISSENSARCHITEKTUR "task force" Urban Co-Design Operational Unit & Services (OPUS).
Contacts with Taiwan, Brasil, Poland
The WISSENSARCHITEKTUR team had a lively exchange with representatives from cities in Germany (Stuttgart, Berlin-Kreuzberg, etc.) and international cities of Taiwan, Brazil, Poland, etc. "I like the collaborative spirit inherent of the event. The Smart-City-Community builds a network", Dr. Stadelhofer said. The collaboration with HCU Hamburg's "stand partners" is also set to continue.
About Smart City Expo World Congress
For over 10 years, the Smart City EXPO World Congress, organised by Fira de Barcelona, has brought together leaders from the most innovative companies, governments and organisations. Under the title "The New Urban Era", over 1,000 exhibitors, representatives from around 800 cities and more than 600 smart city experts took part in 2023 to share their projects and find solutions to make cities more sustainable, efficient and liveable. This year, the organisers counted over 25,000 visitors.

About WISSENSARCHITEKTUR - Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture
The WISSENSARCHITEKTUR - Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture is an interdisciplinary think-tank conducting research, design, and consultation at the intersection of design and social sciences. Our lab explores the multiple cross-links between environmental structures (spaces, buildings, cities), and knowledge processes (innovation, creativity, co-operation). To investigate knowledge dynamics in space, we create visualisation and modelling tools, and apply them in academic training as well as in professional practice.
