Objectives and Work Programme
Modern architecture is characterised by flexibility and individuality. Especially in the living and working areas, these qualities are in demand for interior design. Furniture, doors and partition walls enjoying high demand. Glass proved to be suitable here due to its flexible design options (opaque, partially transparent, printed, backlit, etc.). The project Glasfur-3D shows new design and construction possibilities through an innovative composite element. Glass is joined by a load-bearing composite with a polymeric core. In addition to ecologic and economic advantages, the resulting sandwich construction offers great design freedom for the components.
The aim of the cooperation project is the development of a composite element made of glass and a 3D-printed polymeric core. On the one hand, the focus is on the production of suitable core structures in room-high formats using 3D-printing processes. On the other hand, a transparent and load-bearing composite needs to be investigated. The detailed design of the element itself, its structural connections to other components or similar elements are developed within the cooperative. The research work includes not only structural design considerations, but also experimental material and component testing methods, which are accompanied by numerical simulations.
