Project Description
High-quality facades provide protection, utility and safety functions. Sustainable facades and resource-saving construction methods are increasingly coming into focus in society. The aim of this research project is to develop partially transparent lightweight elements for the material-efficient design of lightweight, wide-span, architecturally attractive building envelopes. The innovative use of thin glass offers great potential for weight reduction. New designs and manufacturing processes are needed for safe use in facades. High rigidity and load-bearing capacity of the composite element is achieved by the adhesive bond between the thin glass and an open, partially transparent plastic core. The lower system weight promises slimmer substructures with reduced material consumption. The use of flexibly modifiable biopolymers (polysaccharides) for the stiffening core also improves the ecological balance of the lightweight construction. The core is manufactured using a 3D printing process to enable customer-specific, site-specific, material-optimized molds. The type of components as well as the production of the composite can significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of the building envelope. These and other factors will be assessed in a project-wide ecological screening.
