Project Description
The desire of architecture for more geometric freedom creates great challenges for traditional manufacturing processes. In the context of increasing digitalisation, manufacturing processes can be automated with the help of robot-based processes. The use of the large-scale equipment realised in this project enables research work on the material-efficient construction of individualised building products.
In addition to an extruder for additive processing of thermoplastic polymers, the device is also able to implement subtractive work using a CNC-mill. In a workspace of 4 x 2 x 3 m, components can be produced in close-to-reality formats. The flexibility of the robot arm enables projects in various sub-areas of construction industry research. In addition to the production of formwork elements for concrete or fibre composite components, the research focus of the Institute of Building Construction is on the use of stiffening structures in glass construction. This is intended to enable the use of thin glass and more material-efficient in façade constructions.
