Project Description
With regard to the goals of the German government to achieve a nearly climate-neutral building stock by 2050, concepts have to be developed in which building components can make a greater contribution to the efficient use of energy. The aim of the research project is to develop a self-sufficient elemental-façade system that combines integrated energy generators and their storage components with intelligent air conditioning driven by predictive, self-learning control systems.
The predictive regulation of room air conditioning, which accounts for both weather forecast and patterns in user behaviour, has the potential to safe up to 40 % of energy relative to conventional systems. However, this requires constant computational effort to adapt to highly individual situations. To reduce the required computer power, a control system based on mechanisms of machine learning will be developed. The technology for room air conditioning usually requires a lot of space as well as a comprehensive infrastructure due to the spatial separation from the air-conditioned rooms. For this reason, the façade-system has to be self-sufficient and make use of a climate-regulation that is independent of supply media. It consists of modular façade elements for power generation and storage, thermal energy generation and air conditioning, as well as transparent elements with integrated light control and glare protection mechanisms, which are efficiently controlled by the self-learning control unit.
