About the Institute
The Institute of Construction Informatics was founded in 1986. The focus of our academic work is on Building Information Modelling (BIM), Intelligent Buildings, Facility Management, and Robotics.

Institute of Construction Informatics
The Institute of Construction Informatics at the TU Dresden was founded in 1986. The first director was Professor Falko Kerbach (1939 - 2007). He was succeded as director by Prof. R. J. Scherer in 1994. Commencing in Spring 2018 Professor Karsten Menzel has taken over the directorship of the Institute.
Currently, nearly 20 researcher are employed at the institute. The work focuses on information technology in Civil Engineering. Our interdisciplinary team covers the a broad spectrum of diciplines, such as: Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Science. Main research topics are: Building Information Modeling, i.e. the modeling of buildings, sites, processes, cost, etc. Furthermore, our work includes information logistics, distributed software systems, and conceptual modeling methodologies. The institute has coordinated numerous EU projects and national joint research projects, among others the BMBF project “Mefisto” or the EU project BIM4EEB. The continuous cooperation with industry, and accordingly, the dissemination of research results are documented through our active involvement in standardization bodies, multiple technical committees and research associations. The institute plays a major role in the DIN, ISO, IAI, EAPPM bodies, as well as, in several international journals that support the transfer of knowledge and standardization.
