Abstract:
This paper systematically examines the renovation backlog in wastewater management. To this end, the status quo of the quantitative and qualitative renovation requirements for sewers in Bavaria was analysed in order to derive insights into the causes of damage over the life cycle of a sewer. Studies, surveys and a comparative analysis of guidelines and recommendations for sewer renovation provided insights into the renovation backlog, which were verified in discussions with the sewer network operators in Buchloe and Freising. The evaluation of the literature revealed an increased potential for damage due to operational influences during installation. However, due to the infrequent inspections of sewer networks, damage is only detected much later. Addressing the renovation backlog requires a significant increase in inventory assessments, renovation activities and investment. In addition, public acceptance of wastewater disposal and its importance for the environment, health and safety must be increased.
