BIW4-07 : Numerical methods for the simulation of modern materials with application to lightweight constructions
The module includes modeling aspects of lightweight materials and special issues of numerical methods in mechanics. After completion of the module the students are familiar with modern approaches for the numerical calculation of lightweight materials.
The students know specific finite elements of structural mechanics, allowing in particular the calculation of geometrically and physically nonlinear lightweight structures. They have the ability to identify artificial stiffening effects of finite elements and to reduce them with effective means of element technology. Furthermore, the students are familiar with standard methods and advanced approaches for the simulation of selected inelastic micro-heterogeneous materials.
After completion of the module the students are able to independently perform numerical calculations based on self-implemented material descriptions and to assess and evaluate the results obtained with the finite element method also in critical cases.
