BIBOB Workshop - Bad Schandau
Info
The first workshop of our BIBOB project took place on 26.06.2025 all day from 10:00 to 17:00 at the National Park Center Bad Schandau. The aim was to strengthen German-Czech cooperation and bring together experts from the field, scientists and students from both countries in order to facilitate a lively professional exchange across national borders.
Program schedule
After the welcome and project introduction by Dr.-Ing. Torsten Heyer from TU Dresden, six further exciting presentations followed. The Advisors examined beaver dams from a variety of perspectives - from biological to engineering and legal aspects in Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. Particular attention was paid to the effects of dams on the hydrological-hydraulic regime of rivers and streams.
The coffee breaks and the joint lunch provided a welcome break between the presentations and at the same time offered opportunities to talk to each other - often the best technical discussions developed here! During the workshop, the latest project results were presented by Prof. Tomáš Dostál and Dr. Aleš Vorel. In four further exciting presentations, beaver experts from different regions and parts of the country shared their practical experience in beaver management with the audience - from the Dübener Heide (Ms. Janine Meißner) to Bavaria (Mr. Gerhard Schwab) to Switzerland (Ms. Cécille Auberson) and the Czech Republic (Ms. Jitka Uhlíková).
In the interactive discussion that followed, four particularly controversial theses/questions were addressed. The lively participation of the workshop guests made this program item the real highlight of the event. Passionate debates arose about the protection status of the beaver and the future handling of beaver activities.

Acknowledgements
A big thank you goes to the European Union, which made both the project and this workshop possible with the Interreg funding program Saxony-Czech Republic. We are very pleased about the lively participation and the great interest shown by representatives of various nature conservation organizations from the German-Czech border region. The response was really impressive!
Many thanks also go to the seven dedicated Advisors (three of them from our own project team) and especially to Dr.-Ing. Heyer, Dr. Aleš Vorel and Ms. Tereza Mináriková, whose confident and entertaining moderation ensured that the event was optimally accompanied. Special mention should be made of the Saxon Switzerland National Park Center, which made its premises available to us, and the local butcher's shop Dünnebier for the all-round successful catering.
The workshop was a complete success and showed how valuable cross-border exchange is in beaver management. The new contacts and impressions will certainly be remembered for a long time to come!
