Cluster of Excellence "Care - Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction" approved - success for TU Dresden in the Excellence Strategy
TU Dresden has achieved a significant success in the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State governments: The application for funding for the new Cluster of Excellence "CARE -Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction" was officially approved today. The decision was announced live during a broadcast by the DFG and the German Council of Science and Humanities. The "Excellence Strategy" of the German Research Foundation (DFG ) aims to sustainably strengthen Germany as a science location and further improve its international competitiveness. TU Dresden submitted a full proposal for a total of six Cluster of Excellence initiatives for the funding phase 2026 to 2032 by August 22, 2024.
The announcement was eagerly awaited at TU Dresden during the public viewing in the Dülfersaal - and ultimately celebrated with great jubilation. Numerous members of the university, including many members of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, followed the announcement live and shared in the joy of this science policy milestone.
Prof. Viktor Mechtcherine, Director of the Institute of Construction Materials at TU Dresden and spokesperson for the Cluster of Excellence Initiative CARE, said today: "The funding of the Cluster of Excellence CARE is an outstanding signal of recognition of the expertise and cutting-edge research that we have built up at TUD in the field of sustainable construction in the truest sense of the word. Furthermore, this funding is a decisive step towards the transition to a climate-neutral construction sector - one of the greatest levers for climate protection. At CARE, together with our partners at RWTH Aachen University, we are developing innovative and well-founded solutions for highly productive, resource-saving construction methods and the sustainable use of existing buildings. In addition to the implementation of our ambitious research program, a close exchange with politics, business and society is a central concern for us, so that the rapid transfer of the results into building practice succeeds."

The funding period begins on January 1, 2026 and runs until December 31, 2032.
