This year, the Bauindustrieverband Ost e. V. (BIVO) has once again awarded the "Prize of the East German Construction Industry" to four outstanding theses in the fields of Civil Engineering and Architecture. The prize has been awarded since 2004 and thus sends out a strong signal for the promotion of young academics in the construction industry. BIVO President Jörg Muschol explains:
"The construction industry is facing major challenges in the face of ecological, technological and social change. This makes it all the more dependent on well-trained, research-strong and committed specialists. The East German Construction Industry Prize honors theses that combine scientific standards with high practical relevance and a clear focus on the future. The award-winning theses impressively demonstrate the capabilities and foresight of our universities. They are a clear signal that we have excellently trained talent in eastern Germany who are ready to take on responsibility and actively shape the future of construction."
Josefine Knoche (HTWK Leipzig) was awarded the main prize in the Civil Engineering category. Her master's thesis is dedicated to the development of a CO₂-reduced concrete that uses recycled brick as a cement substitute. The thesis impresses with its well-founded material-technical analysis and its concrete application reference in carbon concrete construction. Antonella Polzin (HTWK Leipzig) received the special prize for her work on joining technology for walls in hybrid wood-carbon concrete construction methods. Her contribution provides an important impetus for resource-conserving and innovative construction.
The main prize in the discipline of architecture went to Oliwia Fila (TU Dresden). Her diploma thesis "Urban LAB Archipelago Dresden 2023" designs a real laboratory for circular building in the Ostragehege area of the state capital. The concept combines material cycles, educational opportunities, logistics and urban infrastructure to create a sustainable urban development model. The special prize went to Mia Krüger (TU Dresden). Her work entitled "In neuem Gewand: Konglomerat Festspielhaus Baden-Baden" shows in a sensitive and experimental way how creative further development can succeed in existing buildings.
Bauindustrieverband Ost e. V. (BIVO) represents the interests of 260 construction companies with 20,000 employees in the states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
