First CFEA Workshop - Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy
On 14.12.2022 the first, one-day workshop of the CFEA took place in Tharandt, which was especially aimed at PhD students and research assistants of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
Dr. Björn Günther (Chair of Soil Resources and Land Use and coordinator of CFEA) presented the different methods of scanning electron microscopy in theory and practice to the participants. He was supported by Liane Stirl (CTA Professorship of Forest Utilization) by demonstrating the preparation steps for different environmental samples. Also own samples could be prepared and microscoped - so not only the surfaces of wood and metal samples and their elemental composition were analyzed, but also very interesting images of Quaternary gastropods (snails) were produced, whose shell structure is being investigated for its suitability as an environmental proxy in a research project of Dr. Christiane Richter (Heisenberg Professorship of Physical Geography and Palaeoenvironmental Research).
