Former Federal Minister of the Environment and winner of the “World Food Prize” as guest lecturers in international environmental training program at TU Dresden

The Center for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) at TU Dresden has been designing and implementing environmental education courses for postgraduates in management positions in developing and emerging countries since 1977. So far 124 courses have been held with a total of 2507 participants from 145 countries. The aim is to support selected experts in the course to strengthen sustainable development in the countries of origin and foster international cooperation. The program is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the TU Dresden. It is carried out in close cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and UNESCO.

On June 17th, 2021, Dr. Barbara Hendricks together with colleagues of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) will provide a guest lecture in the ongoing course. Dr. Barbara Hendricks has been a member of the German parliament since 1994. From 2013 to 2018 she was Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. In this role, Barbara Hendricks headed the German delegations to the Climate Change Conferences of the Contracting Parties (COPs) in Lima in 2014 and in Paris in 2015. After the Paris Agreement, she pushed the development of the German Climate Protection Plan 2050. In February 2021, Barbara Hendricks was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in particular for her many years of voluntary work in various associations. In her voluntary work, she focuses, among other things, on environmental issues and sustainable development.

In addition, CIPSEM invited Prof. Dr. Rattan Lal from Ohio State University (USA) as a visiting professor in May. In 2020 the soil scientist was awarded the “World Food Prize”, which is considered the “Nobel Prize” in the field of agriculture and nutrition. Prof. Lal received the award for his more than five decades of commitment and his diverse scientific contributions to global food security, in particular for his holistic approaches to improving the soil fertility of smallholders in the tropics. Professor Lal holds an honorary doctorate of the TU Dresden since September 2015 and has been closely associated with Dresden as a science location since the FLORES Institute of the UN University was founded.
