Prof. Albrecht Bemmann turns 75 years
In March 2024, Prof. Dr. rer. silv. habil. Drs. h.c. Albrecht Bemmann celebrated his 75th birthday. Bemmann studied at the Tharandt Forestry Section of TU Dresden from 1970-1974 and received his golden diploma certificate in 2024. He completed his doctorate in Russian at the Leningrad Forestry Technical Academy in 1977 on the topic of "Wood destruction activity of some spruce spores and their effect on wood". He habilitated at TU Dresden in 1986 with a thesis on "The forestry and timber industry in the USSR - development, status and prospects". He was awarded honorary doctorates by the St. Petersburg Forestry Technical Academy (2003) and the Lithuanian Agricultural University of Kaunas (2010).
From 1988 to 1994, Bemmann headed the Chair of Forest Utilization at TU Dresden, and from 1994 to 2014 the Chair of Forestry and Timber Industry in Eastern Europe. He worked on a wide range of topics from the transformation of the forestry and timber industry in Eastern European countries to the cultivation and use of tree plantations. In this context, two major research projects on the cultivation of tree species on agricultural land, which Bemmann coordinated from 2010 to 2014, deserve special mention. AGROWOOD and AgroForNet laid the foundations for further research into short rotation plantations, which researchers were able to build on in the follow-up project Dendromass4Europe.
Since his retirement in 2014, Albrecht Bemmann has continued to play an active and constructive role in forestry research at Tharandt. He was active as Senior Professor until 2020. To this day, he is active as a consultant in the ASTAT/II project on the regeneration and use of walnut forests in Kyrgyzstan and regularly contributes his expertise to the success of conferences on the use of renewable resources.
