Summary:
In the years 2009-2012 a first evaluation of all national parks in Germany was carried out with the aim to provide an impulse for further development. This should contribute to a continued improvement of the management and the general conditions in the parks. As part of this ‘F + E’ (‘research and development’)-project the implementation status of the recommendations given from the first evaluation will be charged.
The project module "species management and invasive species" focusses on the deepened survey and evaluation of measures carried out in species management. This includes the promotion of target and indicator species as well as the restriction of invasive species in the recent and future core zones of the national parks. Often, obligations due to international agreements conflict with the objectives of a segregative process protection concept. The in-depth processing of the part "species management" is intended to provide particular approaches, how to proceed with the management of certain species.
The collection of data is based on a survey by questionnaires, a literature review, and workshops in all 16 German national parks. The project aims on scientifically founded management approaches for the specific conditions of the individual national parks. In particular, compromises are to be defined between overly intensive management and “laissez faire” in the treatment of invasive species in national parks.
