Field trip within the FOBF37 module
On July 12, 2024, a field trip to the pine stands of the Lieberoser Heide in southern Brandenburg took place as part of the FOBF37 (Forest Protection Practice). These are currently severely affected by mass outbreaks of the nun moth (Lymantria monacha) and the pine moth (Dendrolimus pini) with complete defoliation of tree crowns. Surrounded by a simultaneously fascinating and depressing picture, all participants were first able to go on their own discovery tour to gain an impression of the existing insect community. After introductory words from the manager of the Peitz forestry office, Mr. Seliger, Prof. Müller explained in detail the bionomies of the species and the possible monitoring methods. The participants were then able to try out one of these, the winter ground search, for themselves on site. Despite the unusual time period for this method, numerous relevant objects were found and discussed. Finally, a test tree felling was carried out, which allowed a direct view into the pine crown, so that the feeding process and its consequences could be observed up close.
