2016 Chair of Forest Protection field trip
On June 27, 2016 the traditional field trip of the Chair of Forest Protection staff took place. This field trip does not only provide further education but is also used for preparing future field trips for students and for collecting teaching and research material. This year's destination were several sites in Brandenburg. After hunting for feeding patterns of the poplar and willow borer (Cryptorynchus lapathi) we drove to the pine forests near Lieberose, which have been severely damaged by nun moth (Lymantria monacha) and pine-tree lappet (Dendrolimus pini) in recent years. Here we were able to examine, fotograph and collect breeding and feeding galleries of different longhorn and bark beetles as well as their antagonists. After having a picnic at Swan Lake, where "wood sculptures" created by beavers (Castor fiber) can be found along the shore, we lastly drove to a short rotation coppice near Cahnsdorf, to collect red poplar leaf beetles (Chrysomela populi) for laboratory experiments as well as shoot cocoons and larvae of the cream-bordered green pea (Earias chlorana).
