Project description
The aim of the LINA project is to find strategies which minimise negative impacts by insect pest in short rotation coppices (SRC). Achieving this objective involves the usage of biological, bio-technical as well as technical cultivation measures. Thus, the use of pesticides should be reduced in general. Within the LINA project research will focus on the main pest in poplar SRC, the great red poplar leaf beetle (Chrysomela populi L.). This species is well known to regularly occur in high densities causing significant damage to the plants. The main contribution of the project will be the definition of recommendations for action for plant protection measures in SRC. The recommendations will be guided by the principles of integrated pest management (according to article 14 of Directive 2009/128/EG), including the definition of thresholds, methods for monitoring, biological controls (e.g. conservation of natural enemies), technical cultivation measures, and mechanical controls. All findings will be summarised to crop and sector-specific guidelines with respect to integrated pest management, which can be used by farmers and consultants.
