Successful science outreach at charcoal kiln festival in Tharandt
On 30 May 2026, our team participated in the Charcoal Kiln Festival in Tharandt with an information booth. The focus was on the importance of charcoal for archaeological research and on the Interreg project ArchaeoTin, which investigates historical charcoal kiln sites and their significance for reconstructing past forest landscapes and land-use history. To make our research methods more accessible, visitors were invited to take part in an interactive quiz. Using a digital terrain model, participants searched for traces of historical charcoal kiln sites and gained insights into the use of high-resolution topographic data in archaeological research. As a fitting prize, a bag of charcoal was raffled among all participants. The strong interest and numerous discussions highlighted the public's enthusiasm for archaeological and environmental history research. The festival provided an excellent opportunity to present our current work and engage with visitors about the long-term interactions between humans, forests, and resource use.
