"Cellular agriculture in the media" New paper by Peter Rothe published
A new article by Peter Rothe, Research Associate at the Chair of Human Geography, has been published in the journal Geographice Helvetica. It can be accessed free of charge via this link and deals with the topic of cellular agriculture:
Cellular agriculture (CellAg) is increasingly emerging as a technology that aims to address critical issues in the food system by providing an alternative to conventional meat.
Disseminating this information to non-scientific audiences is a challenge when it comes to communicating complex technical developments. Broad information within the public takes place particularly via the various newspaper and media offerings.
The cooperative approach presented here makes a contribution to understanding these discussions and dynamics. The focus is on four selected countries: Brazil, India, Australia and Germany. Newspapers from these countries were evaluated by means of a qualitative content analysis and the results were then jointly interpreted. One important result was the striking similarity of the main topics reported on in the countries examined. In addition, the majority of the newspaper articles took a positive and market-oriented perspective.
- Germany is characterized by its emphasis on news from research and development.
- Australia stands out for its focus on market and consumer aspects.
- India is notable for its prioritization of food security.
- Brazil highlights market factors and expresses concerns about market barriers.
The results merit further investigation as they show that societies across geographic regions tend to receive superficial, positive news rather than high-quality analysis with perspectives on all possible impacts.
