Profile and research interests
Matthias Forkel studied geography and geoinformatics with a focus on remote sensing and completed his doctorate at the interface of global biogeochemistry and remote sensing. He considers himself an interdisciplinary environmental scientist with a focus on remote sensing. He has held the Chair of Environmental Remote Sensing at TU Dresden since 2019. His core research areas are method development and evaluation of optical and microwave satellite observations for monitoring, understanding, quantifying and modeling changes in terrestrial ecosystems and landscapes, in particular interactions between atmosphere, vegetation, water and carbon cycles and forest fires, and the associated feedbacks in the Earth system. He has a strong interest in combining globally-oriented basic earth system research with the practical requirements of regional climate change adaptation (focus on Central Europe).
Matthias Forkel's research focuses on understanding terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, disturbance regimes and climate sensitivities through the integration of Earth observation, data analysis and data-based process modeling. He has contributed significantly to conceptual and methodological developments in the areas of large-scale vegetation phenology, biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks, fire-vegetation interactions and climate-induced ecosystem change by combining multi-sensor satellite data with process-based and statistical modeling approaches (e.g. Carvalhais et al. 2014; Forkel et al. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019c, 2025; Buermann et al. 2018; Li et al. 2022, 2024).
A central focus of Forkel's profile is the development and application of remote sensing for vegetation fire and fire management, including the quantification of global fire dynamics and the identification of climatic, vegetative and anthropogenic influences on forest fire activity (Forkel et al. 2012; Forkel et al. 2017, 2019a, 2019b, 2025). His research deals with satellite-based indicators of fire loads and fuel moisture, fire behavior and fire severity worldwide and in temperate forests (Beetz et al. 2024, Forkel et al. 2023, Kranz et al. 2025). This line of research culminates in the S4F approach described in Forkel et al.(2025), in which various satellite datasets are integrated to quantify how vegetation, fuels and moisture affect wildfire emissions. More recently, he has contributed to forest fire risk assessments that integrate biophysical and socioeconomic vulnerability dimensions to develop regional climate adaptation strategies (Avouris et al. 2025; Almeida et al. 2024).
A second important core research area deals with the use of microwave remote sensing to characterize vegetation structure, biomass and water status. This work aims to link plant physiological states, forest structure and fire-relevant fuel moisture processes by combining passive and active microwave observations with modelling and field data. Forkel's studies demonstrate the feasibility of determining global leaf moisture content using passive microwave signals (Forkel et al. 2023) and combine microwave remote sensing with lidar to quantify changes in the vertical structure of forests (Liu et al. 2024a, 2024b, 2025). Previous contributions on large-scale passive microwave optical depth of vegetation (VOD) datasets and derived products (Moesinger et al. 2020; Teubner et al. 2018, 2019, Wild et al. 2022) provide fundamental methodological components that support this research direction.
