Research interests

Matthias is an environmental scientist and holds the professorship for environmental remote sensing at TU Dresden. His main research interest is the development and application of optical and microwave satellite observations and related methods to observe, quantify and model changes in land ecosystems and vegetation, understand their underlying processes, and the related feedbacks in the global carbon cycle and the Earth system. 

Linking Vegetation Dynamics, Disturbance, and Water–Carbon Interactions from Space

Matthias Forkel’s research focuses on understanding terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, disturbance regimes, and climate sensitivities through the integration of satellite Earth observation, data-driven analysis, and dynamic vegetation modelling. His work advances knowledge of how climate variability, extreme events, and human activities regulate vegetation productivity, carbon and water cycling, and ecosystem resilience. He has contributed substantially to conceptual and methodological developments in large-scale vegetation phenology, biosphere–atmosphere feedbacks, and climate-driven ecosystem change by combining multi-sensor satellite data with process-based and statistical modelling frameworks (e.g. Carvalhais et al. 2014; Forkel et al. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019c, 2025; Buermann et al. 2018; Li et al. 2022, 2024).

A central pillar of Forkel’s profile is the development and application of remote sensing for fire science and management, including quantification of global fire dynamics, reconstruction of long-term burned area, and identification of climatic and anthropogenic controls on wildfire activity (Forkel et al. 2012; Forkel et al. 2017, 2019a, 2019b, 2025). His research addresses satellite-based indicators relevant for forest fuel conditions, fire behaviour and fire severity in temperate forests (Beetz et al. 2024, Forkel et al. 2023, Kranz et al. 2025). This line of research culminates in the approach described in Forkel et al. (2025), which provides new large-scale datasets and quantifications on how vegetation biomass and moisture modulate wildfire emissions in the Amazon. More recently, he has contributed to wildfire risk assessments that integrate biophysical and socioeconomic vulnerability dimensions to inform climate-sensitive  adaptation strategies (Avouris et al. 2025; Almeida et al. 2024).

A second major research direction advances the use of microwave remote sensing to characterize vegetation water status, canopy structure, and ecosystem-scale drought responses. This work aims to bridge physiological water limitation, forest structure, and fire-relevant fuel moisture processes by linking passive and active microwave observations with modelling and field evidence. Forkel’s recent studies demonstrate the feasibility of retrieving global leaf-level moisture indicators from microwave signals (Forkel et al. 2023) and combine microwave remote sensing with lidar to quantify changes in canopy vertical profiles, biomass allocation, and drought-disturbance vulnerability (Liu et al. 2024a, 2025, 2024b). Earlier contributions to large-scale vegetation moisture and productivity datasets (Moesinger et al. 2020; Teubner et al. 2018, 2019, 2021) provide foundational methodological components supporting this line of research.

Overall, Matthias Forkel’s research integrates remote sensing innovation with ecosystem science to improve our understanding of climate-sensitive ecological processes and their management relevance.
