Gaia Focused Product Release
For more than 20 years, Lohrmann Observatory of TU Dresden has been involved in the ESA mission Gaia. The goal of this mission is to create the most accurate and complete catalog of about two billion celestial objects, mostly stars of our Galaxy, but also extragalactic objects and Solar System asteroids. To this end, Gaia measures with the highest accuracy, among other things, positions, motions, brightnesses and colors of these objects. At regular intervals, the Gaia consortium publishes preliminary results in so-called "Data Releases" - based on the observations collected and processed up to that point.
To demonstrate the richness and diversity of the data collected by Gaia, five astronomically relevant and very different topics were selected, which are now made available to the public in a so-called "Focused Product Release" (FPR).
The Gaia FPR contains in detail:
- Astrometry and photometry from engineering images taken in the omega Centauri region.
- The first results of quasars' environment analysis for gravitational lenses search.
- Updated astrometry for Solar System objects.
- Extended radial velocity epoch data for Long Period Variables.
- Diffuse Interstellar Bands from aggregated RVS spectra.
The Lohrmann Observatory participated directly in the first three of the above mentioned topics by either software, relativistic modeling or data sets that were developed and created in Dresden.
Further details are currently subject to an embargo, which will be lifted on October 10, 2023 from 10:00 CEST.
