• Natural river biofilms were invaded by E. coli in the presence or absence of stress through Cu²⁺.
• Initial introduction of E. coli was successful regardless the presence or absence of stress.
• Abundance of E. coli decreased in the absence of stress.
• In presence of stress E. coli established itself in the biofilm.
• Increases in E. coli under stress coincided with a loss in microbial community diversity
