Professor Dr. Christina Dornack appointed to the German Advisory Council on the Environment
The Environmental Council takes up its work on July 1, 2020
On the proposal of Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze, the Federal Cabinet approved the new appointment of the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) on June 11, 2020. Four university professors from different disciplines with special scientific knowledge and experience in environmental protection were newly appointed for the next term of office, which starts on July 1, 2020 and lasts until mid-2024:
The four new members are:
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christina Dornack is director of the Institute for Waste and Recycling Management at Dresden University of Technology. Her scientific work focuses on material flow analyses, waste and recycling management, mineral wastes, residue-related bioeconomy, the nexus between water, waste and soil, and international waste management strategies.
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Köck is Professor of Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Leipzig and heads the Department of Environmental and Planning Law at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ. In addition to environmental and planning law, his work focuses on the transformation fields of energy, agriculture and food as well as the sustainable development of cities and rural areas.
Prof. Dr. Josef Settele is an adjunct professor of ecology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He is also deputy head of the Department of Biocenosis Research at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ. His main research interests include biodiversity, agroecology and land use, and transdisciplinary research and assessments.
Prof. Dr. Annette Elisabeth Töller is Professor of Policy Analysis and Environmental Policy at the FernUniversität in Hagen. Her research interests include national and European environmental policy.
The following members were reappointed to the Council:
Prof. Dr. Claudia Hornberg is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Health Sciences at Bielefeld University. She conducts research on environment and health, in particular on environmental influences on human health, ecological health promotion and environmental justice.
Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert is Professor of Energy Economics and Sustainability at the Hertie School of Governance and Head of the Energy, Transport, Environment Department at the German Institute for Economic Research. She focuses on economic effects of climate, energy and transport policies.
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lucht is Professor of Sustainability Science at the Department of Geography at Humboldt University in Berlin and Head of the Earth System Analysis Department at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. He conducts research on planetary stress limits, the Earth's biosphere, and socio-ecological issues in the Anthropocene.
The German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) has been advising the German government on environmental policy issues for almost 50 years. The Council's composition of seven professors from various disciplines ensures a scientifically independent and comprehensive assessment, both from a scientific-technical perspective and from an economic, legal and health science perspective. It is to point out undesirable developments and possibilities for their avoidance or their elimination. It submits a comprehensive environmental report to the Federal Environment Ministry every four years and also prepares special reports, statements and open letters.
