Research project "Sol-gel based biofilm inhibiting coating for use in water supply systems."
Subproject 3: Investigation of the suitability of sol-gel coatings in water technology
Cooperation: DVGW-Technologiezentrum Wasser (DVGW-TZW, German Water Centre), Branch office Dresden
Funding: BMBF, DVGW-TZW
Duration: May 1998 until April 2001
Project description and results:
Within the scope of this project, surface materials were developed whose composition and structure are such that, on the one hand, the accumulation of inorganic precipitates (e.g. iron and manganosides) is prevented and, on the other hand, the growth of microorganisms is inhibited. The main objective here was to prevent biofilm formation on the surface. The results of the project are of particular importance in the field of drinking water supply and here for storage in tanks.
