Cooperation with Vietnam
The Institute of Waste Management and Contaminated Site Treatment (IAA) is strongly committed to international collaboration in various fields of activity. Among different countries in Southeast Asia, the excellent cooperation with partners from Vietnam was translated into various research and development programs. Vietnam is nowadays a very fast developing country with strong interest in the improvement of environmental conditions. IAA works together with its partners on the development of strategies for the protection and optimal utilisation of natural resources and it dedicates a huge effort to the transfer and exchange of know-how in interdisciplinary environmental sectors. Among them, a special attention is awarded to implementation of integrated water and waste management.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Since 2001, IAA was involved in 17 R&D projects funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Commission (EC). The projects' output includes a series of guidelines and handbooks on environmental management, with emphasis on utilisation of biomass and biowaste for renewable energy, biogas production, municipal solid waste management, but also water-related topics such as integrated water management, restoration of urban lakes and managed groundwater recharge. TRAINING AND EDUCATION
To secure a smooth implementation of the research outcomes, various educational programs are continuously developed. This includes programs for academic education, such as, for example, the bilateral Master Course with Hanoi University of Science (HUS) and contributions to the establishment of a Water Doctoral Network for German and Vietnamese PhD students. Over the years, the institute hosted Master and PhD students, as well as academic staff from partner universities who visited IAA for short and long-term periods. The second focal point is given to advanced training programs in different environmental sectors targeted at all major groups of stakeholders in Vietnam: ministries, public water service operators, local and regional authorities, various decision makers. The Journal of Vietnamese Environment (J. Viet. Env.) was lunched by IAA in 2011 as part of the German-Vietnamese academic network on training and education. The J. Viet. Env. (ISSN 2193-6471) follows the Open Access policy and offers online content free of charge via its internet address. The papers submitted shall describe new findings in the field of environmental management converged from fundamental research studies, experimental work, review and policy papers, as well as short communications and relevant event reports.
