Pure Water and Rare Materials: Resource-Efficient Removal and Recovery of Critical Raw Materials from Water and Wastewater Streams Using Membrane Capacitive Deionization
On November 1, 2026, the new ESF PLUS STEP Junior Research group ReWaRare will begin its two-year project. The goal of the project is to scale up Membrane Capacitive Deionization (MCDI) for the recovery of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel from (waste)water streams from the laboratory scale to practical application.
Project partners include the chairs of Hydrochemistry and Water Technology, Urban Water Management, Process Engineering in Hydro Systems, Chair of Waste Management and Circular Economy, and Chair of Groundwater Systems at TU Dresden. Six early-career researchers are collaborating on an interdisciplinary basis within the early-career research group, supported by postdocs and principal investigators from the participating Chairs. The project is funded by the ESF with 1.4 million euros.
