At the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Hydro Sciences, Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology, the Chair of Meteorology offers a project position as
Research Associate (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
starting at the earliest possible date, funded by the DFG project "Investigations of ABL dynamics and structure over heterogeneous surfaces with turbulence-resolving simulations (LES)". The position comprises 75% of the full-time weekly hours and is limited to 48 months. The period of employment is governed by § 2 (2) the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG).
This project is part of the DFG research unit Land-Atmosphere Feedback Initiative (LAFI, FOR 5639). LAFI is an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers from atmospheric, agricultural, and soil sciences as well as from bio-geo-physics, hydrology, and neuroinformatics proposing a novel combination of advanced research methods. The overarching goal of LAFI is to understand and quantify land-atmosphere feedbacks via unique synergistic observations and model simulations from the micro-gamma (≈ 2 m) to the meso-gamma (≈ 2 km) scales across diurnal to seasonal time scales.
Tasks: The main objective of this project is the investigation of how the dispersive fluxes associated with mesoscale secondary circulations change with height within and above the surface layer and affect surface flux measurements. The specific tasks include large-eddy simulation of the vertical transition in turbulence structure, application of deep learning for the development of an energy balance closure correction of surface flux measurements, and participation in field instrumentation installation workshops with connected educational seminars.
Requirements:
- university degree (Master), preferably in meteorology, physics, hydrology, hydro science and engineering, geoecology, environmental sciences, or similar programs of study;
- strong hands-on and problem-solving skills; high motivation, good organizational skills, and an independent and conscientious approach to work;
- reliability and a high degree of initiative; interest in environmental atmospheric sciences as well as interdisciplinary cooperation and good team spirit;
- strong communication skills including good English oral and writing skills; good programming skills in data analytics, e. g. R, Python, fundamental knowledge in micrometeorology.
- a basic knowledge of German and numerical modelling and fluid dynamics are an asset.
