Global web-based portal with over 1200 examples of managed aquifer recharge projects
Many existing MAR schemes offer excellent best-practice examples that can be very useful for planning and implementation of new projects. The purpose of the present study was to promote MAR applications worldwide through a dedicated webGIS platform. About 1200 case studies from over 60 countries from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Oceania were collected, analyzed and compiled by the INOWAS team in the first global inventory of MAR schemes (note: case studies from Europe were provided by the EU-funded DEMEAU project). The inventory contains information on site name, location, MAR type, year when the scheme came into operation, the source of infiltration water, the final use of abstracted water, and the main objective of the MAR scheme. The visualisation of the inventory on the MAR Portal was made possible by the International Groundwater Resource Assessment Centre (IGRAC) while the whole project is supervised and promoted by the IAH-MAR Commission of the International Association of Hydrogeologists.
