New project on promoting the use of reclaimed water through managed aquifer recharge in Egypt

In large parts of North Africa there is a critical water short-age, which is increasingly aggravated by ongoing developments. Economic development, agricultural growth and urbanisation lead to an increasing water demand. By making use of reclaimed water, managed aquifer recharge (MAR) offers an energy-saving, cost-effective solution to close the gap between water demand and limited water resources. 

Against this background, the new project Female scientists for the use of reclaimed water through managed aquifer recharge in North Africa (FEMAR) is exploring the potential of a smart MAR system to contribute to sustainable water resource management in Egypt and other North African countries. The Research Group INOWAS contributes to the project with expertise on assessing the technical, ecological and socio-economic feasibility of managed aquifer recharge at selected sites in Egypt. 

The project coordinated by adelphi research gGmbH Berlin is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), initially for an initiative phase of six months (June - December 2021), followed by the submission of a full proposal for the second stage of three years. The project FEMAR is funded within the African - German cooperation "Programme Advocating Women Scientists in STEM (PAWS)".
