Visit of a delegation from Uzbekistan highlights opportunities for collaboration

Uzbek delegation visiting TU Dresden
On 3 July 2025, the Research Group INOWAS at TU Dresden had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Javlonbek Ishchanov, Dean of the Hydromelioration Faculty at TIIAME National Research University (Uzbekistan), for a full-day institutional visit hosted by the Institute of Groundwater Management.
The visit opened with discussions between Dr. Ishchanov and Prof. Peter Krebs, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The morning session focused on exploring mutual research interests in groundwater research and sustainable water management, laying the groundwork for future cooperation, especially with regard to youth knowledge development and exchange. Later, the guests were given a guided tour of the faculty’s core research facilities, offering insights into TU Dresden’s capabilities in hydrogeological analysis and environmental monitoring.

The afternoon featured a strategic exchange session with representatives from various TU Dresden units and research partners, including: Prof. Dr. Peter Krebs, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Dr. André Lindner, Managing Director & Advisor for Internationalization of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Prof. Dr. Daniel Karthe, Head of the Resource Nexus Programme at the United Nations University – Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES), and Prof. Ahmad Hamidov, Senior Researcher at Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). The joint session highlighted opportunities for research collaboration, mobility programs, and joint initiatives between TU Dresden, TIIAME, and regional partners such as UNU-FLORES and ZALF.
Mr. Dilmurod Rakhmatullaev, representing the Agency for Innovative Development under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, also participated in the meeting. He proposed that the Agency provides full financial support to cover all expenses, including travel, insurance, and accommodation for young Uzbek PhD researchers during their 3-6 months stay at TU Dresden. The offer was very welcomed by the delegation which will soon start advertising the mobility in the respective universities.

The visit and meetings were organised by Dr. Serena Caucci from the INOWAS Research Group, with support from MSc. Asliddin Bobocholov (INOWAS, TU Dresden) and Prof. Hamidov from ZALF, who facilitated the trip of Dr. Ishchanov to Germany. Sustainable irrigation, water resilience, and integrated land management in Central Asia and Europe were central focus of the meeting given the common research interest of the Universities.
Dr. Ishchanov’s visit represented a significant milestone in deepening TU Dresden’s international collaboration in Central Asia, with a particular focus on water and environmental sciences. The visit builds on the Framework Cooperation Agreement signed between TU Dresden and TIIAME in March 2025 and complements other joint initiatives aimed at attracting talented students and researchers from Uzbekistan, including the visit of the Uzbek Ambassador to TU Dresden on 10 July 2025 and the opening of the Saxony Liaison Office in Tashkent in November 2023.
