World Water Day - "Groundwater - making the invisible visible"
World Water Day is held every year on 22 March to raise awareness of the importance of freshwater and to advocate for sustainable management of resources, with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goal.
This year, the theme is "Groundwater - making the invisible visible".
Groundwater contributes a large part to the public water supply and is thus the most important and precious resource for drinking water supply. However, groundwater is exposed to increasing dangers in terms of its quality and quantity.
Its quality is affected by pollutant inputs and by residues of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. In terms of quantity, climate change poses a challenge.
Sustainable management of this valuable resource is essential. Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind.
