Scientific monitoring of a pilot test for membrane filtration of output water from the Ronneburg water treatment plant of Wismut GmbH
Funding period:
01.12.2016 - 31.08.2017
Project overview:
At WISMUT GmbH sites, contaminated mine and seepage water is treated in water treatment plants, among other things. Currently, all water treatment plants are operated as precipitation plants in different modifications. The process separates radionuclides and heavy metals according to specified emission limits, but salt concentrations remain high. For hardness constituents, sulphate and chloride, there are immission limits for the individual receiving waters. Therefore, membrane filtration processes are being tested in a pilot plant for their suitability for salt separation from WISMUT waters. The Chair of Hydro Process Engineering is accompanying this pilot plant operation.

Potential determination of the use of forward osmosis in automobile production at Volkswagen AG
Funding period:
01.12.2016 – 31.08.2017
Project content:
Forward osmosis uses osmotic pressure difference between the feed solution (low concentration of dissolved substances) and the draw solution (high concentration of dissolved substances), that are separated by a semipermeable membrane to process liquid streams. Due to the concentration gradient there is a solvent stream, usually water, from the low concentration to the high concentration of dissolved substances. Thus, a concentration of the feed solution and a dilution of the draw solution occurs. Due to the large number of different waters and the different possible combinations there are a lot of applications for forward osmosis in industrial water cycles. In the scope of this research project the application potential of forward osmosis ought to be determined exemplary for the Wolfsburg Volkswagen AG factory. Therefore possible feed and draw solutions are identified and characterized in greater detail. Afterwards it will be tested if the waters are suited to be treated with forward osmosis with the help of laboratory experiments. Finally application possibilities for forward osmosis ought to be developed and optimisation possibilities to be pointed out.
