Abstract
Membrane fouling is still a major obstacle in membrane bioreactor (MBR) applications forrnwastewater treatment. Limiting phenomena related to membrane fouling are flux decline andrnrise in resistance. The main objective of this work is to understand more about foulingrnmechanisms. Therefore, the influence of melamine addition to diluted sludge on the filtrationrnperformance was to be analysed. For the structural characterisation of the local depositrnthickness a newly developed optical method, called Laser Sheet at Grazing Incidencernmethod, was used.rnResults, obtained in dead-end mode and at constant pressure, revealed, for the first time, thernpossibility of in-situ, real time, and non-destructive cake thickness development detectionrnwith the optical method when filtering suspensions of biological flocs. It was then shown thatrnnot just the global filtration parameters but also the deposit structure depends on the TMP.rnFurthermore, it was proven that melamine addition to diluted sludge enhances the flux, rnreduces the fouling resistance, and modifies the deposit thickness. In addition, no change inrnDOC elimination was observed by analysing the samples with the LC-OCD-OND method.rnBiopolymers and humic substances were observed to be the main foulants. Moreover, arnparticle repartitioning along the filtration channel was detected with a favoured accumulationrnof foulants close to the dead end.
