Abstract
On a small technical model swimming pool at the chair of water supply in context of thernBMBF-pool-project, different treatment combinations are tested in terms of formation andrndegradation of disinfection byproducts (DBP). The aim is the health-related optimization ofrnswimming pool water treatment. A “Body fluid analouge” is dosed for the simulation ofrndissolved organic matter in swimming pool water, whereas the particulate bather load isrnunconsidered so far. However, particles have great importance in swimming pool water duernto the disinfection of particles adhering microorganisms (MO) is slower and the disinfectionrnbyproducts-formation potential in the treatment stages could increase. Therefore, the aim ofrnthis work is to develop a surrogate mixture, which simulates the particulate matter put in byrnswimmers in pool water. In a first stage natural swimming pool waters were analyzed byrntheir particulate composition and properties. Particle size distribution of particles bigger thanrn1 μm, zetapotential, point of zero charge (pzc) as well as the particulate organic carbon (POC)rnwere determined. The dry matter content was calculated by an assumed density and thernparticle number and size distribution and the ratio of POC to TS was determined. The resultsrnof the colloid size measurement could be not used, due to the poor measurement quality. Inrnthe next step possible particle surrogates were analyzed and compared with the propertiesrnof particles in natural swimming pool water. Flour, maize starch, salad dressing powder, rnhumic acid concentrate and kaolin were chosen as basis for surrogates. It proved saladrndressing powder, humic acid concentrate and kaolin to be suitable especially because of thernrealistic particle size distribution, whereby kaolin could be used as an inorganic componentrnand humic acid concentrate or salad dressing powder as an organic component. The particlernsize distribution of salad dressing powder varies between different measurements, so thatrnas a suitable particle surrogate a mixture of humic acid concentrate and kaolin is used.
