Abstract
"Due to rapid urbanization in the past decades, the road runoff induced by storm water is a major concern for urban pollution management. Thus a clear understanding of the characteristics of pollutants which build up on urban surface is essential to estimate pollutants runoff individualities and to design methods to minimize the impacts of pollutants in the environment. Among these pollutants accumulated on the surface, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are concerned in such runoff, and also known to be acutely toxic, genotoxic, as well as carcinogenic organic compounds. PAHs can mainly be classified into two main groups: petrogenic and pyrogenic. Petrogenic PAHs are introduced naturally into the environment by oil seeps or anthropogenically by spills of crude or refined petroleum product. Pyrogenic PAHs are formed from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuel or biomass and are commonly distributed by atmospheric deposition and urban runoff. The persistence and toxicity of PAHs make them a target for remedial investigations.rnIn the present study, I selected six sites (one high traffic loading street, one low traffic loading street, two pedestrian streets, one roof area and one inner courtyard) in and around TU Dresden, Germany on which I collected the road dust with a Puzzi 100 Super vacuum cleaner. Then the size fraction distribution of the dust samples were determined by the wet sieving dividing samples into four groups (0.45μm
