Abstract
The setup and design procedure of sewer model has been time consuming and hardly automatized procedure. Although the spatial analysis capabilities of Geographic Information system (GIS) has been advantageous in supplementing the design process of sewer systems, yet the topological and structural measures of the system is under developed. On the other hand different approaches for topological and structural measurement of networks, such as: road and river networks have been conducted. The aim of this study is to look for methods of measuring topological and structural properties of sewer networks and analyze the statistical distribution of sewer properties with respect to the selected measurement methods. As part of the study the Strahler order has been used as a principal hierarchical measure of sewer system and accordingly distribution of sewer properties such as diameter, length and drainage area with respect to the Strahler order is analyzed. The approach was tested at different scales and results show that though further analysis is required, the Strahler order may be used for hierarchical measure of sewer properties. Moreover, beyond numerical ordering, the Strahler number may be further related with other catchment properties and could be very helpful instrument to automatize the setup and design process of sewer systems.
