Abstract
Urban sewer network, like most other infrastructure, is buried underground making data acquisition difficult and expensive. For this reason there are some municipalities which have only limited or no data of their sewer network. On the other hand surface information is relatively easily available from respective agencies or they can be derived from digital elevation models (DEM) and aerial-photography after appropriate processing in Geographic Information System (GIS) The aim of this study is to look for methods of estimating sewer properties from urban surface information. As part of the study closeness between street network and sewer network, relationship between building size and sewer properties and finally comparison of slopes of sewer lines and corresponding surface slopes from DEM have been carried out. Nice sub-catchments were selected as test areas which vary in urban structure, topography, building attributes and boundary conditions. Though the results show that there is some relation between the parameters, applicability of these methods to estimate rnsewer properties needs additional data and further expertise work is required in this area.
