Abstract
"Lift stations are mainly used to pump waste water from a geodetic low level into a higher gravity sewer system. In Germany, the number of connected residents is decreasing due to demographic effects. This influences waste water distribution system. With regard to sewage lift stations it leads to inefficient pumping regime and longer detention times in the system, resulting in odor problems and increasing biogenic sulphide acid corrosion.
Objectives and targets of this thesis are the development of methods to quantification of these effects and develop appropriate mitigation measures for concrete boundary conditions. Development and application of the methods shall be illustrated for the case study of the Sewage lift system Bautzen Gesundbrunnen - Ferienpark.
For this, three main topics shall be investigated : First, Effect of demographic change on waste water flows to the pumping station. Second, Effect on specific power and total power consumption and investigation of alternative solutions. Third, Effect on sulphide production and corrosion and comparison of infra structural and operational mitigation measures. Evaluation of demographic effects following these topics leads to suggestions to the stakeholder considering the best decision and future anticipation."
