Abstract
Produced water is the largest byproduct of the Oil and Gas Production industry. It contains different organic and inorganic compounds: Historically, produced water was treated to discharge it in disposal wells or over board at offshore operations. Factors such as increasing volumes of produced water, water scarcity, stringent regulations, and higher ecological awareness by the public, increased the pressure on the petroleum companies to treat produced water for reuse. Aim of this thesis is to review the state of the art in oilfield produced water treatment. Depending on the way of reuse, different specification and therefore treatment methods are required. While it is possible to treat produced water for reuse in the laboratory, high TDS concentrations, high volumes and in water dissolved aromatics often make it difficult in practice. There is a high amount of treatment methods. Every technique has advantages and disadvantages. A combination of several techniques is necessary to treat produced water efficiently.
