Abstract
This work investigates the potential of Forward osmosis applications to reduce the water consumption of an automobile production by water recovery from process waters. Four process waters were used as feed or draw solution against 1 mol/L NaCl solution or deionized water, respectively. Six experiments with a Toray CSM TFC FO membrane were carried out to investigate the possible permeate and reverse solute fluxes as well as the deposition potential of the process waters.
The results show that industrial process waters used as draw solutions exert low osmotic pressure and the permeate fluxes stayed beyond expectations. The low permeate fluxes were improved by a factor of 2 with an AL-DS membrane orientation but did not reach 10% of the manufacturer reference permeate flux of 30 L/m²h. The industrial process water feed solutions lead to tremendous deposition affects with permeate flux decreases of 20% to 80%. The reverse solute fluxes increased with increasing ion concentration and variety.
