Highly Automated Ride to Bärwalder See for a Swim 🚌 | A Quick Question About the WALEMO Bus in Lusatia
Can autonomous buses ensure that people in rural areas also have access to reliable and regular public transportation? Researchers at TU Dresden are exploring this question at Bärwalder See in Lusatia. There, they are currently collecting data using a highly automated bus. In the future, such buses could enable people in rural areas to continue traveling safely and in an environmentally friendly way to the doctor, to go shopping, or to tourist destinations.
As part of the WALEMObase research project, a minibus equipped with numerous sensors will continue to run from the Klitten train station to the beach at Bärwalder See until the end of 2026. While there have already been many trials with semi-autonomous vehicles on highways and in urban areas, such data is still lacking for rural areas. Currently, the bus travels at a maximum speed of 18 km/h. In addition, each trip is currently supervised by an operator who intervenes during complex maneuvers such as turning or making U-turns and is available to passengers as a point of contact.
In the video, the project manager of WALEMObase, Dr. Maximilian Helbing, discusses the goals of the research project.
