On a signal box excursion
As every year, the Chair of Railway Signaling and Transport Safety Technology set off on an excursion after Whitsun. On Tuesday, signal boxes at Riesa and Döbeln railroad stations were on the agenda. While Riesa is still completely controlled by old technology, the Riesa-Döbeln line is equipped with a modern electronic interlocking of the ZSB 2000 design. The control station for this is located in Döbeln.
The next day we went to the Elster Valley Railway. The replacement of the old interlockings is imminent: an electronic interlocking is due to go into operation here next year. Until then, the safety of the line, which is operated without a line block in train reporting mode, will be increased by the "Technical Support Train Reporting Operation" (TU-ZMB). The current technology was inspected in Greiz, Elsterberg and other stations.
After visiting the signal box in Barthmühle, there was still time for a detour to the Elster Valley Bridge, which is currently being renovated - with the largest scaffolding in Europe. The group learned interesting facts about the history of the structure and details of the renovation. All in all, two successful excursions!
