RadSim – Bicycle traffic planning made faster, easier, more reliable – and available nationwide!
The analysis of different planning options, equipment features, or infrastructure measures in bicycle traffic has so far often required substantial time, financial resources, and personnel. Although established transport demand models are sometimes used, they are often very complex and require specialized expertise. Simpler tools and assumption‑based estimates frequently cannot represent the effects of infrastructure measures in a realistic and reliable manner. This is precisely where the RadSim research project comes in.
In the RadSim project, the route choices of cyclists were scientifically examined using a comprehensive dataset of around 273,000 GPS rides collected during the STADTRADELN campaign in eleven pilot municipalities. Based on these analyses, robust route‑choice models were developed and directly integrated into the RadSim web application. The web tool, developed jointly with municipalities, enables—for the first time—a nationwide, practice‑oriented, and scientifically sound simulation of bicycle traffic flows, as well as a data‑driven assessment of different infrastructure measures and planning scenarios.
RadSim is available free of charge for participating STADTRADELN municipalities with a sufficient data basis until October 31, 2026.
