Abstract
During the last years the Internet as a global platform gained increasingly importance as integral part of economy and society. Currently, the term Web 2.0 refers to undergoing changes of the Internet. This study looks closer at the characteristics of these changes. The notion of Web 2.0 is strongly debated and is not yet clearly defined due to substantially different point of views among experts. From an all-embracing viewpoint Web 2.0 must be understood as a socio-technical network linking elements such as users, technology, applications, and participation. Technical advance gives rise to new innovative web applications. Users with online computer skills are enabled to new participatory opportunities transforming the way of communication within the Internet. New applications like Weblogs, Wikis, Social Networking Services, Shared Platforms require a change of users behaviour from a more passive to an active mode. User generated content might yield actively forming the Internet by its users. Web 2.0 applications moreover serve basic functions like communication, interaction, and collaboration. Thus, Web 2.0 results in a denser network of information, knowledge as well as the users among themselves. The utilization of these new applications is yet mainly spare time oriented. The potential for business models lies ahead in extended individual participation well beyond spare.
