PrioPoint - Dynamic detection points for public transport priority at traffic signals
The sustainable transformation of urban mobility requires a shift in modal share towards sustainable modes of transport, including public transport, cycling, micromobility and walking. This development highlights the need to prioritise these modes at traffic signals when allocating the limited resource of green time over private motorised and freight traffic.
A key aspect of public transport priority is determining the optimal time at which a public transport vehicle requests priority, which is technically implemented through a specific detection point. Although solutions based on V2X technologies already exist for optimising traffic operations at signalised intersections, they require substantial investment by municipalities in the necessary infrastructure.
The PrioPoint project therefore aims to investigate whether dynamic detection points for public transport vehicles can provide a more cost-effective alternative for reducing delays for all road users. To this end, existing signal control programs for selected intersections will be integrated into a simulation environment. Using real-world measurements of approaching traffic flows, the impact of dynamic detection points on delays under different traffic conditions will be analysed.
The project is being conducted in cooperation with the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office of the City of Leipzig and Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB). During the first project phase, scheduled from January to December 2027, the legal, administrative and technical requirements for data provision will be prepared.
