Pupils try out optimization criteria for traffic lights
As part of the SCHAU REIN campaign week, interested pupils from various parts of Saxony came to TU Dresden to find out about work and study opportunities. The group that visited us focused on sustainable traffic control and management. After learning the basics of the planning and operation of traffic signal systems, commonly known as traffic lights, the students set themselves the task of reconciling various planning objectives. Many aspects were discussed intensively and it became clear that there is no one right solution. Which road users (pedestrians, cyclists, streetcars, buses, cars...) are prioritized? What impact does this have on the others? These considerations can be anchored in conventional planning by experienced experts or, in the future, by AI trained with their expertise. This workshop gave an insight into the current state of research, which contributes to overcoming the shortage of skilled workers in engineering offices.
